Match ratings and review of New York Red Bulls vs Toronto FC
Editor Note: Ratings are on a 10-point scale with 6 being the starting value. Substitutes with over 10 minutes of regular time will get a rating
The New York Red Bulls weathered a delay and controlled the match from start to stop to start again and stop again. The Red Bulls extend its home undefeated streak to 9.
Starting XI:
Ryan Meara:
Andrew - 7.0
Meara only had to make two saves on Saturday night, but he made good reads around his box and pitched his second shutout in three matches.
Dylan Nealis:
Andrew - 9.0
Dylan Nealis had an immense performance against Toronto FC, logging 5 tackles, 2 interceptions, 7 progressive passes, and an assist. He silenced Toronto’s right-sided threats in Derrick Etienne Jr. and Lorenzo Insigne and contributed to New York’s third clean sheet of the season.
Sean Nealis
Andrew - 7.0
Sean Nealis had a relatively quiet game against Toronto FC, which is usually a good thing for a centerback. He remains an aerially-dominant threat in both boxes and Eile’s best defensive partner.
Noah Eile
Andrew - 7.5
Noah Eile partnered well with Sean Nealis on Saturday night to secure a clean sheet at home. And in addition to executing 2 tackles and 1 block, Eile also reached a team-high 30 carries and notched an assist on the opening goal of the match. Eile continues to offer an extra angle of attack for the Red Bulls which has unbalanced many opponents thus far.
John Tolkin
Andrew - 7.0
I honestly didn’t notice Tolkin very much in this match, but he kept Bernardeschi quiet on Toronto FC’s right wing. Carmona, who played on the left wing for New York, doesn’t offer much in behind, and Toronto’s compact defense away from home made space tight for Tolkin to operate further up the pitch.
Daniel Edelman
Andrew - 7.0
Edelman had a good game in against Toronto FC as he continues to expand his passing range. He tried more progressive passes and played more directly in transition which will be important for this team when Frankie Amaya leaves for Mexico.
Frankie Amaya
Andrew - 8.0
Frankie’s farewell match was a strong one. Amaya had a pass completion of 89% marshaling the Red Bulls’ midfield and played extremely hard on both sides of the ball. His ability to connect plays, retain the ball, and never run out of energy will be sorely missed at Red Bull Arena. Despite being 5’4” Amaya is leaving big shoes to fill.
Wiki Carmona
Andrew - 7.5
Wiki had another strong role-playing performance for New York. He’s already been asked to play ~3 different positions, and he’s been a reliable stop gap at each one. Added to that, he’s still managed to notch 2 goals and 3 assists this season while performing well in statistical categories like Blocks and Interceptions.
Dennis Gjengaar
Andrew - 7.5
This rating is primarily driven by Gjengaar’s goal which was well-taken and displayed his ability to stretch the field. But I still think he offers more off the ball than on it right now…which is totally fine as he’s 20 years old and only just joined the squad this season.
Dante Vanzeir
Andrew - 6.0
Dante Vanzeir and Elias Manoel almost play well together. They see each other’s movements and almost connected on several attempts against Toronto FC, but none resulted in a goal. Dante still has only 2 goals on the season, and will be eagerly awaiting the return of the team’s two primary chance creators.
Elias Manoel
Andrew - 7.5
Manoel’s goal in the 29th minute was electric — we all know the rules by now, Elias only scores bangers. Throughout the match he was positive, dropping deep to create attacking opportunities as well as connecting with Vanzeir up top. He still has moments of sloppiness on the ball which he could afford to clean up, but he played well.
Substitution:
Cameron Harper
Andrew - 7.5
This is Killa Cam’s coming out season. The way he has been playing recently reminds me of the highlight reels Red Bulls fans watched when the team signed him from Celtic in 2021. All season, Cam has played extremely direct, leveraging his pace and on-ball skills to trouble defenders. And he reaped his rewards against a lumbering Toronto backline on Saturday night. It’s tough to give above a 7.5 for such a short appearance, but Cam looks hungry.
Spot on Andrew!
Killa' Cam!! Yes!!
