Rumor Report: Tomás Ángel
The Red Bulls have been linked to Colombian youth striker Tomás Ángel, the son of a club legend
A report Wednesday from Colombian sports radio show, “En la Jugada”, has linked the Red Bulls to free agent striker Tomás Ángel, the son of the club's second all-time leading scorer, Juan Pablo Ángel.
Tomás Ángel is 5’9, left footed, 20 years old and has played for Colombian giants Atlético Nacional over the past 3 seasons, scoring 7 goals in 1500 minutes across all competitions for the club in 2023. He impressed at last year’s U-20 World Cup with Colombia, scoring 3 goals over the course of the tournament.
While center forward has traditionally been his primary position, he has more recently been playing as a winger and as an attacking midfielder for Atlético Nacional. He makes up for his small size with impressive speed and a good first touch, though limited highlights show that he’s quick to get rid of the ball and isn’t very comfortable with his less dominant foot.
Ángel’s recent performances would suggest that the Red Bulls may see him more as a winger rather than a true number 9, but his versatility would offer the team a solid depth option at virtually any attacking position. With Tom Barlow and Omir Fernadez gone, and Lewis Morgan coming off hip surgery, Ángel could quickly establish himself as the first attacking option off of the bench, eventually pushing for a starting role. This is a young player with good pedigree, talent, and a bright future. At the moment, the Red Bulls’ interest is still just a rumor, reported on by Colombian media, that has not yet been confirmed by MLS sources.
While his father’s connection to the Red Bulls is surely a major factor in any interest the club may have in Ángel, this would be more than just a legacy signing based out of sentimentality
